As practitioners in the field of people analytics, it's our professional responsibility to examine and address pay disparities within our organizations. The reality is that pay disparities for women, specifically those who identify as Black or Latina, are a significant issue that cannot be ignored.

According to a study conducted by the National Women's Law Center in 2019 and 2021, using data from the American Community Survey from 2015-2019, the pay gap is especially devastating for Black and Latina women. Here are just a few of the findings from the study:

  • On average, women in the United States lose $406,280 over the course of a 40-year career due to pay disparities. But for Black women, the losses are even more significant at $964,400, and for Latinas, the career losses mount to a staggering $1,163,920.

  • In the state of Pennsylvania, women overall will have to work until they are 70 years old to catch up to what a white man makes at 60 years old. For Black women, it would take until they are 80 years old, and an astounding 92 years for Latinas compared to white men.

  • In the state of Pennsylvania, women overall make 84 cents on the dollar compared to white men, while Black women make just 66 cents and Latinas make 55 cents.

  • Mothers overall are paid just 73 cents for every dollar a father makes in the state of Pennsylvania. For Black mothers, the figure is even lower at just 54 cents, and for Latinas, it's a meager 46 cents compared to white fathers.

These statistics highlight the significant pay disparities that continue to exist for women, and particularly for women of color, in the United States. It's time for us as people analytics professionals to bring this data to the forefront and hold our leaders accountable to take action and address these pay disparities in order to create more equitable and successful workplaces for all employees.
