The Future of Human Resources
The future of HR is all about embracing data and technology. As organizations continue to recognize the value of data in optimizing workforce management, HR professionals must adapt to new tools and methodologies. Here are some key trends I see shaping the future of HR:
Data-Driven Decision Making: Leveraging data to make informed decisions about various aspects of the employee journey ranging from hiring, employee engagement, performance management, and retention will continue to become the norm. Gone are the days of “gut” based decision making. You will need to show evidence of how you made your business decision.
AI and Machine Learning: Utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict employee behavior around topics like termination, performance, identifying talent, and just the overall automation of routine tasks. Some HR Shared Services teams are already exploring chatbot for simple employee needs. Imagine a world where you could ask an analytical question about your employee population and receive not only a text response but accompanying visuals that are interactive! The possibilities with AI are endless.
Employee Experience Focus: Creating personalized employee experiences through data insights, improving engagement and satisfaction. Employees for a long time have been sounding the alarm on having benefits that meet their specific needs. Employees feeling “like a number” will guarantee a big hit to your employer brand. If you want the top talent, you will need to do things they care about.
Real-Time Analytics: Implementing real-time analytics to monitor workforce trends and make immediate adjustments. One point of feedback I’ve seen People Analytics teams receive time and time again is providing data when it's critical and matters. Not predictive analytics but literally understanding what the organization looks like in real-time not as of the last file feed from a week ago.
Critical Skills for the Modern Human Resources Professional
To thrive in this evolving landscape, HR professionals need to develop or enhance skills that goes beyond traditional HR functions. Here are some critical skills that will be essential:
Data Analysis Skills
Being able to collect, analyze, and interpret HR data is crucial, especially in roles that do not have People Analytics professionals. Even if your department has a People Analytics function, as a HRBP, Generalist, Recruiter, or a part of the People Leadership Team, some level of proficiency in understanding data is will be crucial for success. If you don’t understand, how can you use it effectively? Additionally, it would be beneficial to understand data analytics tools (Excel, SQL, R, Python to name a few) and techniques (Regression Analysis, Correlation Analysis, and more) as it will allow you to uncover insights with the plethora of data HR collects.
Skills in data visualization and predictive analytics will enable you to forecast trends and identify opportunities for improvement but you don’t need to start here.
Technological Proficiency
Familiarity with HR technologies such as Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), and Learning Management Systems (LMS), affectionally known as the Ss to me 😊, is essential.
Understanding how to leverage these tools in combination with AI and machine learning applications provide a competitive edge.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
HR Professionals are typically great communicators. Enhancing this skillset by applying it to presenting data insights to drive change within the organization will be key.
Adaptability and Continuous Learning
The obvious one. As the HR landscape is constantly changing, staying adaptable and committed to continuous learning will help you stay ahead of industry trends and technological advancements. Stay curious and maintain a growth mindset.
